Blur face in video
Find faces automatically, blur them, and keep them covered as people move. Free, with no watermark, and your video never leaves your device.
Blurring a face used to mean a video editor, a mask and a lot of keyframes. Here the face finder does the slow part. It scans your video on your device, puts an oval over each face it sees, and moves that oval with the person through the clip. You check the result, cover anything it missed, and download.
It works for one face or a crowd: a single interview subject, a child at a school event, or every bystander in a street clip. If you need to blur someone's face in a video before you post it, you can do it here in a few minutes without installing anything or uploading the footage.
How to blur faces in a video
1
Open your video
Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file into the tool above, or choose one from your device. It opens in your browser and is never uploaded.
2
Find the faces
Select Blur, choose Chosen areas, then select Find faces automatically. Each face becomes an oval that follows the person and shows only while they are on screen.
3
Check and export
Scrub through and drag on the video to cover any face it missed. Raise Blur amount until faces are unrecognizable, then select Export video to download it.
How automatic face blurring works
When you select Find faces automatically, an on-device face detector (Google's MediaPipe BlazeFace model) looks at frames from across the whole video, up to five every second. To catch smaller faces, it checks each frame whole and again in overlapping tiles.
Detections of the same person are linked into one track, smoothed, and padded to cover hair, ears and chin. Each track becomes a moving oval called Face 1, Face 2 and so on, and it only appears while that face is in the shot. The detector downloads once (about 3 MB) and the scan never leaves your device.
How to blur a moving face in a video
Faces found automatically already move with the person: the oval glides between the positions the detector saw. For a face it missed, or an area you drew yourself, you have two ways to make the blur follow it.
- Track movement automatically. Place the area over the face at one moment and select the button. The area is followed forwards and backwards from there, and the positions are saved so you can check and nudge them. If it loses the face, it tells you when, so you can move the area back on and track again.
- Follow movement, by hand. Turn it on, pause at a few moments where the face has moved, and drag the area onto it each time. The area glides in a straight line between the positions you set.
Fast head turns, people passing behind others and faces entering at the edge of the frame are the usual trouble spots, so scrub through those moments before you export.
Blur, pixelate or black box: which hides a face best?
Blur looks the softest and suits vlogs, interviews and incidental passers-by. Pixelate gives the familiar mosaic used on the news. Black box covers the face with solid black and is the only option that leaves nothing of the original behind.
Strength matters more than style. A light blur or small blocks can leave a familiar face recognizable, so raise the slider until you can't tell who it is at full screen, not just in the small preview. For anyone who could be at risk if identified, use Black box.
Why blur faces before you post
People filmed in public often have not agreed to appear online. Blurring bystanders, children, patients, students or coworkers is a basic courtesy, and sometimes an obligation. Under privacy laws such as the EU and UK GDPR, a recognizable face can be personal data, and many schools, employers and platforms set their own rules about identifiable people in video.
This is general information, not legal advice, and the rules vary by country and by use. When in doubt, blur. Because everything runs in your browser, the unblurred footage is never sent to anyone else's server. To hide names, screens or documents as well, see how to censor a video.
Questions about this kind of blur
How do I blur someone's face in a video for free?
Open the video above, choose Blur and Chosen areas, then select Find faces automatically. To hide just one person, drag on the video to draw an area over them and switch its shape to Oval. Select Export video to download it. There is no charge, signup or watermark.
Can I blur one face and leave the others?
Yes. Run Find faces automatically, then select each face you want to keep visible and delete it. Or skip the face finder and draw a single area over the person you want hidden.
Why did it miss a face?
The detector works best on faces turned roughly toward the camera. Very small, distant, blurry, dark or turned-away faces can be missed, as can a face that is only on screen for a moment. Draw an area over any you see and use Track movement automatically to follow it.
Can I blur a face for only part of the video?
Yes. Faces found automatically appear only while that person is on screen. For any area, move the playhead and press Starts here and Ends here (or the [ and ] keys) to set exactly when it shows.
Can I keep one face clear and blur everything else?
Yes. Put an area over the face you want to keep, then turn on Blur everything except the areas. This keeps a box or oval sharp. It does not trace the outline of a person the way portrait mode does.
Is it safe to blur faces in a private video?
Yes. Face finding and blurring both happen in your browser, so the video is not uploaded and nobody else sees it. The finished file is saved straight to your device.
Does face blurring work on a phone?
Yes, in modern mobile browsers. Finding faces and exporting take longer on a phone than on a computer. See how to blur a video on iPhone for step-by-step instructions.
